Australian event rider Sam Griffiths is best known for his success at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro where he helped the Aussie team to win bronze in the eventing tournament and finished a close fourth in the individual event. He also won the 2014 Badminton Horse Trails and was named Event Rider of the Year at that year’s L’Annee Hippique Awards. Now based in Dorset, England, he still competes internationally and also trains horses.
Griffiths was born in Melbourne in May 1972. He competed in his first CCI5* competitions in 2004 and gained attention in 2009 after winning bronze in both the Badminton and Burghley Horse Trials. He would win the former and take bronze again in the latter in 2014.
Griffiths made his Olympic debut in 2012 but suffered a fall. He returned in 2016 and helped Australia take bronze whilst also narrowly missing out on an individual medal. Today, he is a veteran of more than 250 eventing and jumping competitions and a well-respected trainer and rider working out of his stables in Gillingham, Dorset.
