Christian Ahlmann

Christian Ahlmann was born on December 17, 1974, in Marl, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany. His journey in equestrian sports began at age 11, inspired by friends and a family background in horsemanship, with both his father Georg and brother Dirk also being equestrian athletes. Ahlmann quickly distinguished himself, earning the “goldenes Reitabzeichen” at just 14, making him one of the youngest riders ever to receive this honor. His international debut came early, at the European Championships in 1989 when he was 15 years old. Over his career, he has developed a reputation as a calm and skilled rider with a soft touch.

Ahlmann’s career is marked by consistent high-level performance and numerous milestones. In 2003, he secured dual gold medals at the European Championships in Donaueschingen in both individual and team jumping events. He continued his Olympic success by winning a bronze medal in team jumping at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics and another bronze in team jumping at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. A significant achievement came in 2011 when he won the FEI Show Jumping World Cup with his horse Taloubet Z. In 2012, he reached the pinnacle of the sport, becoming World Number One in the show jumping rankings.

Throughout his career, Ahlmann has demonstrated resilience and a sustained commitment to the sport. He has accumulated multiple medals at European Championships, including gold and several silver medals in team jumping, and a bronze at the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen. In 2014, he achieved victory at the prestigious CHIO Aachen. More recently, he was named Best Rider of the Global Champions League consecutively in 2021 and 2022. He has notable wins in events like the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix in Hamburg in 2013 with Codex One. Ahlmann’s philosophy emphasizes the enjoyment of riding, stating, “Most of what I have in sports is well behind me. But I still want to sit in the saddle at the age of 70 – simply because riding is fun for me.”
