Kevin Nickelberry, born on October 15, 1964, in Washington, D.C., is a seasoned collegiate basketball coach with a career spanning over three decades. He graduated from Virginia Wesleyan University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. His coaching career began in 1991 as the head women’s basketball coach at Columbia Union College, where his teams achieved three consecutive NAIA Playoff appearances (1991-1994). Nickelberry transitioned to men’s basketball, serving as an assistant coach at various institutions including Howard, Monmouth, Holy Cross, Charlotte, and Clemson before becoming a head coach. He held head coaching positions at Hampton University (2006-2009) and later at Howard University (2010-2019), accumulating nearly 200 career wins during his time as a head coach.
Throughout his career, Nickelberry has demonstrated a strong focus on player development and recruitment, contributing to numerous postseason appearances across seven programs. At Hampton, his strategic changes led to the team’s scoring defense improving significantly, moving from 168th in Division I to 12th in the NCAA by his third year. His tenure at Howard was marked by academic achievements, with teams recording GPAs of at least 3.0 in eight seasons and nearly all four-year seniors graduating. He is credited with recruiting and coaching multiple All-MEAC, Rookie of the Year, and Player of the Year honorees, including James Daniels, Charles Williams, and R.J. Cole.
More recently, Nickelberry has been involved in high-profile coaching roles, including working at LSU for three seasons where his recruiting efforts contributed to top 10 recruiting classes (2020, 2021, 2022) and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022 as interim head coach. He then served as Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Georgetown, securing the No. 2 ranked Transfer Portal recruiting class in the nation in 2022. Currently, he is an assistant coach at Florida State, where his recruitment expertise played a significant role in bringing Jamir Watkins and other prominent transfer and freshman recruits to the program, contributing to a substantial increase in team victories and an ACC Tournament first-round bye.
