Shane Edward Bond was born on June 7, 1975, in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. Before his professional cricket career, Bond served as a police officer in Christchurch. He made his first-class debut for Canterbury on January 20, 1997, at the age of 21. His early domestic career was steady, but a year-long break to join the New Zealand Police in November 1999 temporarily paused his cricket progression. He returned to the sport in the 2000/01 season, demonstrating consistent performance that soon caught the attention of national selectors.
Bond’s international career began in the 2001/02 season with a call-up to the Test squad for a tour of Australia. Despite a challenging Test debut, he quickly established himself as a formidable fast bowler, earning the player-of-the-tournament award in the 2001–02 VB Series with 21 wickets in nine games. He continued to excel, leading New Zealand’s bowling averages at the 2003 Cricket World Cup, where he famously delivered a 156.4 km/h ball against India. His career, however, was frequently interrupted by severe injuries, including recurring stress fractures in his back, which required surgery in 2004. These physical challenges limited his Test appearances to 18 matches before his retirement from the format in December 2009. His involvement with the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League (ICL) in 2008 led to a temporary hiatus from international cricket, with his contract with New Zealand Cricket being terminated. He later severed ties with the ICL in June 2009, making him eligible for national selection again.
After retiring from all forms of international cricket in May 2010, Bond transitioned into coaching and commentary. He served as the bowling coach for the New Zealand cricket team from October 2012 until the 2015 Cricket World Cup. He then took on roles as bowling coach for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2015, assistant coach for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League, and head coach for Sydney Thunder from March 2018. More recently, Bond has been appointed head coach for Paarl Royals in SA20 and the men’s head coach for Birmingham Phoenix.
