Khabib Abdulmanapovich Nurmagomedov was born on September 20, 1988, in Sildi, Dagestan ASSR, Soviet Union. His exposure to martial arts began early, with his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, coaching him in wrestling from the age of eight. His father converted the ground floor of their family home into a gym, fostering an environment rich in martial arts training. Nurmagomedov developed a strong foundation in wrestling, judo, and sambo, disciplines that would later define his professional fighting style. His early training included unique experiences such as wrestling a bear at nine years old, highlighting the intensity of his formative years.
Nurmagomedov made his professional mixed martial arts debut in September 2008. He quickly accumulated an undefeated record of 16-0 on the regional circuits of Russia and Ukraine. This impressive run attracted the attention of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he signed a six-fight deal to compete in the lightweight division in late 2011. He made his UFC debut on January 20, 2012, defeating Kamal Shalorus via submission. Throughout his UFC career, he continued to demonstrate dominant grappling control, achieving significant milestones such as setting a new UFC record for most takedowns in a single fight with 21 successful takedowns against Abel Trujillo at UFC 160.
His career culminated in becoming the UFC Lightweight Champion, a title he held from April 2018 to March 2021. He retired with an undefeated professional record of 29-0, a notable achievement in mixed martial arts. Post-retirement, Nurmagomedov ventured into roles as a mixed martial arts trainer and promoter, founding Eagles MMA and promoting the Eagle Fighting Championship (EFC). He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on June 30, 2022. Despite a brief return to coaching and cornering, including for bouts at UFC 302 and UFC 311 in 2025, Nurmagomedov ultimately retired from active involvement in coaching in January 2023 to focus on his family.
