Kiki Bertens is a Dutch professional tennis player, who has won ten singles titles and ten doubles titles during her time as part of the WTA Tour.
Born near the Hague, Bertens started playing tennis when she was six years old, joining the local tennis club where her aunt and uncle were members. She received a lot of early support from the coach there, Martin Van der Brugghen. Despite appearing only once in the ITF Junior Circuit, Bertens went on to work her way up through the ITF rankings, making her debut at a WTA main draw in 2011. The following year saw her win her first WTA title in Fes, becoming the first Dutch female tennis player to win a title since 2006. She continued to perform well over the next few years, appearing at tournaments around the world. In 2016 she took home her second WTA victory at the Nuremberg Cup, quickly followed by reaching the semifinals of the French Open and qualifying to play at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. By now Bertens was known as a strong contender, and she lived up to her reputation by defending her title at the 2017 Nuremberg Cup and reaching the WTA Tour Championship final in the women’s doubles competition.
Bertens continues to perform at a world class level, taking home the title at the 2018 Western and Southern Open and the 2019 Mutua Madrid Open. Despite tough competition from younger players, her skill and experience still make her a fierce competitor.
