Salma Hayek was born on September 2, 1966, in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico. Her father is of Lebanese descent and her mother has Mexican and Spanish ancestry. After seeing Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, she decided she wanted to be an actress. At age 12, she attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, Louisiana. She later studied at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City before pursuing acting full-time. Hayek’s career began in Mexico with the successful telenovela “Teresa” (1989-1991), which made her a star in her home country. Despite her success, she moved to Los Angeles in 1991 to pursue a film career in Hollywood, facing challenges with English fluency and initial typecasting.
Her breakthrough in Hollywood came when Robert Rodriguez cast her opposite Antonio Banderas in the 1995 cult classic “Desperado.” This role brought her wider recognition. She continued to work with Rodriguez in “From Dusk Till Dawn” (1996) and had her first star billing in “Fools Rush In” (1997) with Matthew Perry. Hayek also appeared in films such as “54” (1998), “Dogma” (1999), and “Wild Wild West” (1999). In 1999, she founded her production company, Ventanarosa, which produced “No One Writes to the Colonel” (1999), Mexico’s official Oscar entry for Best Foreign Film. Her most significant project was producing and starring in “Frida” (2002), a biographical film about Frida Kahlo, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, making her the first Mexican actress to receive this honor.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Hayek continued to expand her career, directing “The Maldonado Miracle” (2003), for which she won a Daytime Emmy Award. She starred in films like “Once Upon a Time in Mexico” (2003), “After the Sunset” (2004), and “Bandidas” (2006). She also served as an executive producer for the television series “Ugly Betty” (2006-2010), receiving Emmy nominations for her work. More recently, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ajak in “Eternals” (2021) and reprised her role as Kitty Softpaws in “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (2022). Hayek has also advocated for various causes, including violence against women and discrimination against immigrants, and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2021.
