Lachlan Oliver Neale was born on May 24, 1993, in Naracoorte, South Australia. He spent his early years on a farm in Langkoop, Victoria, before his family settled in Kybybolite, South Australia. Neale played junior sports extensively, including football for Kybybolite where he won multiple under-14 premierships alongside future AFL player Jack Trengove. He later attended St Peter’s College, Adelaide, winning the Opie Medal in his final year. His junior career continued with the Glenelg Football Club in the SANFL, where he demonstrated exceptional talent, including a 40-possession game in a grand final, earning him the Alan Stewart Medal. Neale represented South Australia at the 2011 AFL Under-18 Championships, setting the stage for his professional career.
Neale was drafted into the Australian Football League (AFL) by the Fremantle Football Club in 2011. He made his debut in the 2012 AFL season and steadily improved his performance, becoming a crucial midfielder. His dedication was evident after coach Ross Lyon’s feedback led him to significantly enhance his physical conditioning and work rate. Neale earned his first Doig Medal as Fremantle’s best and fairest player in 2016 and a second in 2018. Following the 2018 season, Neale requested a trade to the Brisbane Lions, marking a significant transition in his career.
Since joining the Brisbane Lions in 2019, Neale has flourished, achieving major accolades. He received his first All-Australian team selection and the Merrett–Murray Medal in his inaugural year with the Lions. His standout 2020 season saw him win his first Brownlow Medal with 31 votes, along with the Leigh Matthews Trophy and AFLCA Champion Player of the Year Award. In 2023, he secured his second Brownlow Medal, again with 31 votes. Neale was appointed co-captain of the Brisbane Lions in 2023 and led the team to their first Grand Final appearance since 2004, ultimately securing premierships in both 2024 and 2025. His consistent high-level performance and leadership have established him as one of the premier players in the competition.
