About

Larry Richard Csonka, born on December 25, 1946, in Stow, Ohio, rose to prominence as a powerful fullback whose career spanned 11 NFL seasons. He commenced his football journey at Stow High School, where his robust playing style began to take shape. Csonka continued his athletic and academic pursuits at Syracuse University, establishing numerous rushing records and earning All-American honors from 1965 to 1967. His collegiate success led to him being the eighth overall pick in the 1968 NFL/AFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, where he would become a defining figure in the team’s history.

Csonka’s professional career with the Miami Dolphins was marked by significant achievements, including three consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons from 1971 to 1973. He was instrumental in the Dolphins’ undefeated 1972 season and their back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1972 and 1973. His exceptional performance in Super Bowl VIII earned him the Most Valuable Player award, where he rushed for a then-record 145 yards and two touchdowns. After a brief period with the Memphis Southmen in the World Football League in 1975, Csonka returned to the NFL, playing three seasons with the New York Giants before concluding his career with the Dolphins in 1979, where he received the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Beyond his playing days, Csonka has remained connected to sports and entertainment. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987, and his jersey number 39 was retired by the Miami Dolphins in 2002. Csonka also ventured into broadcasting, serving as a color analyst for NFL games on NBC in 1988 and as an analyst for “American Gladiators” from 1990 to 1993. His post-football endeavors also include producing and co-hosting hunting and fishing shows, such as “Napa’s North to Alaska,” showcasing his diverse interests and continued public presence.
