Laura Benanti was born Laura Ilene Vidnovic on July 15, 1979, in New York City. Her mother, Linda Wonneberger, was a vocal coach and former actress, and her biological father, Martin Vidnovic, was a Broadway actor and singer. After her parents’ divorce, she moved to Kinnelon, New Jersey, with her mother and stepfather, Salvatore Benanti, whose surname she adopted. Benanti developed an early interest in musical theatre, participating in high school and community productions. Her theatrical talent was recognized at 16 when she won a Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Award for Outstanding Actress for her role in “Hello, Dolly!”. This early start laid the foundation for a career marked by critical acclaim and numerous accolades.

Benanti’s Broadway debut came in 1998 in a revival of “The Sound of Music,” where she initially served as an understudy before taking on the lead role of Maria at age 19.
