Layne Beachley

Layne Beachley has transitioned from a record-setting professional surfer to a motivational speaker and advocate for women in sports. After turning professional, Layne Beachley achieved her first event victory in 1994, elevating her world ranking to number six. Despite battling Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in 1994 and again in 1996, she recovered to finish the 1996 season ranked third globally. In 1998, Beachley commenced an unparalleled run, securing her first of six consecutive World Championships.

She dominated the professional circuit from 1998 to 2003, a historic achievement that makes her the only surfer, male or female, to win six consecutive world titles. She further cemented her legacy by winning an unprecedented seventh World Championship in 2006. Throughout this dominant period, Beachley expanded her presence into film, appearing in notable features such as ‘Blue Crush’ (2002), ‘Billabong Odyssey’ (2003), and ‘Step into Liquid’ (2003). In 2004, she made history again by receiving a wildcard entry into the men’s Energy Australia Open in Newcastle, one of the few instances a woman has competed in a male professional surfing event.

She was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2011 and appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2015 for her distinguished service to surfing and for her role as a mentor and ambassador. Beyond her speaking engagements, Layne has lent her voice to factual series like the Seven Network’s ‘Beach Cops’ (2015) and voiced a character in the Australian children’s cartoon ‘Bluey’ (2018). Most recently, she produced ‘The Flood’ (2020) and appeared as herself in the series ‘Surviving Summer’ (2022).
