The acclaimed and dashing Lee Byung-hun is an award-winning Korean actor and singer, best known by Western audiences for his breakout Hollywood role in the blockbuster G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, for Red 2 playing opposite Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren, and for Terminator Genisys in which he played a T-1000 robot alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is also one of the stars of the hit Netflix series, Squid Game, in which he plays the villainous and sadistic Front Man.
Born and raised in Seongnam, South Korea, Lee Byung-hun hadn’t really shown an interest in acting until a friend suggested he should try it out. He successfully auditioned for the KBS TV network in 1991 and was taken on, his first project being the TV drama Asphalt My Hometown. He made his big breakthrough in 2000 when he appeared in Joint Security Area, a film which broke the box office record and became the highest grossing Korean film at the time. It also won him the Best Actor gong at the Busan Film Critics Awards. His many notable works include A Bittersweet Life, the TV series Iris, I Saw the Devil, Masquerade, the award-winning historical TV war drama, Mr Sunshine, and the survival series, Squid Game. His critically acclaimed movie, Inside Men, won him the Best Actor prize in three prestigious Korean award ceremonies. Global stardom came when he crossed the Pacific to feature in many Hollywood films, including Red 2, Terminator Genisys, and The Magnificent Seven. He was the first South Korean actor to present an Oscar at the annual Academy Awards, as well as being, along with Ahn Sung-ki, one of the first South Korean actor’s to have their hand and foot prints immortalised on the forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. He also sings, and having solidified his position as one of Asia’s biggest stars, he is the only actor to sell out the Tokyo Dome with 45,000 screaming fans.
