Harvey Lee Yeary, known professionally as Lee Majors, was born on April 23, 1939, in Wyandotte, Michigan. His early life was marked by tragedy, with his father dying before his birth and his mother a year later in a car accident. He was adopted by his aunt and uncle and moved to Middlesboro, Kentucky. Majors pursued football, first at Indiana University and then Eastern Kentucky University, where a severe back injury ended his athletic career. This turning point led him to acting, attending acting school and adopting the stage name Lee Majors in tribute to football legend Johnny Majors.
Majors’ acting career began with an uncredited role in “Strait-Jacket” (1964) and guest appearances on shows like “Gunsmoke” and “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.” His breakthrough came in 1965 with the co-starring role of Heath Barkley in the Western series “The Big Valley,” which ran until 1969. Following this, he signed with Universal Studios and appeared in “The Liberation of L.B. Jones” (1970) and joined the final season of “The Virginian.” His prominence grew in the 1970s, notably as Jess Brandon in “Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law” from 1971 to 1974.
His most celebrated role arrived in 1973 as Colonel Steve Austin in “The Six Million Dollar Man.” This science-fiction action series became a global phenomenon, establishing Majors as a household name and pop culture icon. The show’s success led to a renegotiated contract that included his own production company, Fawcett Majors Productions. In the 1980s, Majors continued his television success with “The Fall Guy” (1981-1986), where he played Colt Seavers, a stuntman who moonlighted as a bounty hunter, and also sang the show’s theme song. Throughout his career, he has appeared in numerous films and television series, maintaining a consistent presence in entertainment.
