Colt McCoy was born on September 5, 1986, in Hobbs, New Mexico. He distinguished himself early in his football career at Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Texas, where he played quarterback, punter, and briefly free safety under his father’s coaching. He became the all-time leading passer in Texas 2A high school history and fourth overall in Texas high school history, accumulating 9,344 passing yards and 116 touchdowns. His collegiate career at the University of Texas at Austin (2005-2009) was marked by significant achievements, including 45 career wins, the most in NCAA history at the time. He earned numerous awards, such as the Walter Camp Award (twice), Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award, and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, and was a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist.
McCoy was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Throughout his 13-season NFL career, he played for the Cleveland Browns (2010–2012), San Francisco 49ers (2013), Washington Redskins (2014–2019), New York Giants (2020), and Arizona Cardinals (2021–2022). While primarily serving as a backup quarterback, McCoy demonstrated resilience and leadership, notably leading the Washington Redskins to an upset victory over the Dallas Cowboys in 2014, his first start for the team since 2011. He accumulated 7,975 passing yards and 34 touchdowns over his NFL tenure.
Following his retirement from professional football in August 2024, McCoy transitioned into media and business. He joined NBC Sports as an analyst for Big Ten Football and hosts the digital series “Scheme and Clean Pocket” on the Underdog Fantasy network. In early 2025, he launched a real estate office in Fort Worth, Texas, for HPI, focusing on industrial leasing. McCoy’s post-playing career reflects his diverse interests and continued engagement in sports and enterprise.
