Lem Barney

Lem Barney is a Hall of Fame athlete who made a significant impact as a cornerback and return specialist and has since engaged in community and public affairs work. After achieving recognition as a three-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection and an All-American during his collegiate career at Jackson State University, where he amassed 26 career interceptions between 1964 and 1966, Lem Barney went on to make an immediate impact in the National Football League. Drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round in 1967, Barney’s rookie season was exceptionally successful. He earned the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award, led the league with 10 interceptions—returning three for touchdowns—and also served as the team’s punter, securing his first of seven Pro Bowl selections that year.

In 2006, Barney chronicled his journey and celebrated career in his published autobiography, The Supernatural: Lem Barney. Beyond his celebrated athletic achievements and ongoing recognition, Barney remains actively engaged in community and public affairs work, continuing to leverage his platform as a Hall of Fame athlete to make a positive impact.
