Lemuel Jackson Barney was born on September 8, 1945, in Gulfport, Mississippi. He attended 33rd Avenue High School, where he played quarterback. His collegiate career at Jackson State University, a historically black university, saw him become a three-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection and an All-American. He accumulated 26 career interceptions between 1964 and 1966, with nine in 1965 and eleven in 1966. Barney joined the National Football League as a second-round draft pick for the Detroit Lions in 1967.

His rookie season in 1967 was highly successful, earning him the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. He also led the NFL in interceptions with 10, returning three for touchdowns, and served as the team’s punter. Throughout his 11-year NFL career, all with the Detroit Lions, Barney was selected to seven Pro Bowls and was named first-team All-NFL in 1968 and 1969. He ended his career with 56 interceptions for 1,077 yards, and scored 11 touchdowns across interceptions, punt returns, a kickoff return, and a missed field goal return.

After his retirement in 1977, Barney continued to be active, working in public affairs for Michigan Consolidated Gas Company starting in 1979. He also pursued endeavors in entertainment, singing background vocals on Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” in 1971, appearing in the 1968 film *Paper Lion*, and starring in the 1973 film *The Black Six*. Barney was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992, solidifying his legacy as one of the premier defensive backs in professional football history.
