Lennie James

Lennie James was born in Nottingham, England, to Trinidadian parents in 1965. He spent part of his youth in a council children’s home after the death of his mother at age 12, later entering foster care. His interest in performing arts developed during his teenage years, leading him to train at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama, from which he graduated in 1988. Early in his career, James also pursued writing, with his play “Storm Damage” being broadcast by the BBC in 2000 and winning a Royal Television Society (RTS) award in 2001. This early work showcased his talent beyond acting, laying a foundation for his later endeavors as a creator.

James built a notable career in both British and American television and film. He gained significant recognition for his role as Morgan Jones in “The Walking Dead,” a character he originated in 2010 and later reprised in the spin-off, “Fear the Walking Dead.” His portrayal of DCI Tony Gates in the BBC Two series “Line of Duty” (2012) also earned him critical acclaim. In recent years, James has further demonstrated his creative range as the creator, writer, and star of the Sky Atlantic drama series “Save Me” (2018-2022). This series received a BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama Series in 2021, highlighting his comprehensive talents in storytelling and performance.

His career includes a diverse range of projects from film roles in “Snatch” (2000) and “Colombiana” (2011) to voice acting in video games like “Destiny” and “Destiny 2” as Lord Shaxx. James continues to engage with impactful roles, such as Barrington Jedidiah Walker in the BBC TV adaptation of “Mr Loverman” (2024), for which he received the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor in 2025. He is also set to appear as Frank Moses in the upcoming TV series “Mayor of Kingstown” (2025). Throughout his career, James has consistently delivered performances that resonate with audiences and critics alike, earning him multiple awards and nominations.
