Les Miles

Leslie Edwin Miles, born on November 10, 1953, in Elyria, Ohio, established himself as a prominent figure in college football coaching over a career spanning several decades. He played college football at the University of Michigan from 1972 to 1975 under legendary coach Bo Schembechler, earning letters as an offensive lineman in 1974 and 1975. After his playing career, Miles transitioned into coaching, beginning as a graduate assistant at Michigan in 1980. His early coaching roles included offensive line coach at the University of Colorado and a return to Michigan in the same capacity. This foundational experience under esteemed coaches provided him with a comprehensive understanding of football strategy and player development.

Miles’ head coaching career began in 2001 at Oklahoma State University. Despite the program struggling prior to his arrival, he successfully turned it around, guiding the Cowboys to three consecutive bowl appearances and achieving an 8-5 record in 2002, 9-4 in 2003, and 7-5 in 2004. A significant turning point in his career came in 2005 when he was appointed head coach at LSU. During his 12 seasons with the Tigers, Miles achieved significant milestones, including winning the BCS National Championship in 2007 and two SEC Championships (2007, 2011). He also guided LSU to a 13-0 regular season in 2011, earning him multiple National Coach of the Year honors from organizations like the AP, Home Depot, Walter Camp, and Liberty Mutual. His tenure at LSU saw the team average 10 wins per year and produce 22 first-team All-Americans and 69 NFL Draft picks, including 13 first-round selections.

Beyond his on-field successes, Miles is recognized for his philanthropic efforts and approachable public persona. He actively supports causes such as the Children’s Miracle Network and the Special Olympics, and has participated in events like the USO Tour to visit American troops. His engaging personality and media presence, including memorable lines during press conferences and viral moments, contributed to his public appeal. After LSU, Miles coached at the University of Kansas from 2019 to 2020. However, wins from 2012 to 2015 at LSU were later vacated by the NCAA due to a scandal involving a former player, impacting his career record and eligibility for the College Football Hall of Fame.
