Rising Canadian tennis star – Leylah Fernandez, has already achieved a career-high Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of number 28 in the world. With the way things are going, the starlet could well reach the number one spot in years to come. Fernandez won her first WTA title at the 2021 Monterrey Open. At just the young age of 19 years old, she finished runner-up at the 2021 US Open to fellow teenager and future number one spot rival – Emma Raducanu. Fernandez defeated three top five players on her way to the final, which included much more experienced and higher ranked opponents. An average of 2.4 million viewers tuned into the US Open Women’s Championship final, far exceeding the viewership of the men’s final. The star power and visibility that Fernandez already has at such a young age makes her destined for big things.
In 2019, Fernandez won her first professional singles tennis title when she came from behind to beat fellow compatriot Carson Branstine in the final of the Gatineau Challenger. Fernandez then made her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in 2020. Fernandez began 2021 without straight wins in her first four tournaments. However, in March at the Monterrey Open she was victorious in her first four matches to reach the final, defeating Viktorija Golubic to win the first WTA title of her blossoming career. At 18 years old, she was the youngest player in the main draw, and won without dropping a set during the entire tournament.
A long and successful career is ahead of Fernandez and her grounded personality will serve her well in the pursuit for greatness. Fans from all over the world are now ready to see her climb to the top of women’s tennis.
