Born Lily Rose Williamson, she grew up influenced by her parents’ careers in radio and developed an early interest in music, particularly after attending a Bruce Springsteen concert. This led her to take up the drums. Her musical interests expanded in seventh grade when she discovered country music through Kenny Chesney’s “I Go Back,” which resonated with her through its lyrical storytelling. Two years later, influenced by Taylor Swift, she began writing her own songs and discovered her singing voice through a school choir. Rose’s journey to self-discovery as an artist involved recognizing her identity as a gay woman at age 19, a realization that shaped her commitment to authenticity in her career.
While attending the University of North Georgia, Rose was involved in athletics, working as a basketball referee for intramural games. However, a crossroads emerged when she received an invitation to a professional referee-training program, forcing her to choose between sports and her burgeoning music career. She decided to dedicate herself fully to music, dropping her last name to become simply Lily Rose and playing weekend gigs. Her career experienced a significant turning point in late 2020 when she posted a clip of her song “Villain” on TikTok, using the hashtag “#lesbiansinger.” The video quickly went viral, leading to immediate attention from the music industry.
Within weeks of the viral TikTok post in 2020, Lily Rose signed record deals with a management company and record labels. By the end of 2021, she released her debut EP, *Stronger Than I Am*, followed by a consistent stream of singles. Her career has seen her tour with and open for notable artists like Sam Hunt, Shania Twain, Cole Swindell, and Luke Bryan. Rose also made her Grand Ole Opry debut, a milestone she delayed until she felt she had something substantial to communicate through her art. In 2024, she released her EP *Runnin’ Outta Time*, which features six tracks, including “Two Flowers,” “Parking Lot,” and “True North,” reflecting a deeper personal and artistic statement.
