Lisa Buckwitz, born on December 2, 1994, in Berlin, Germany, began her athletic career as a heptathlete before transitioning to bobsleigh in 2013. She quickly distinguished herself, training at the SC Potsdam club and securing two junior championships titles. Early in her bobsleigh career, Buckwitz achieved notable success, including a victory in the two-woman Bobsleigh World Cup event in Königssee in the 2014–15 season, alongside Cathleen Martini. In 2016, she won a bronze medal at the Bobsleigh European Championship with Stephanie Schneider and finished fourth at the IBSF World Championships in Igls. The following year, at the 2017 IBSF World Championships in Königssee, Buckwitz earned a silver medal in the mixed team event as part of a German team.
A significant turning point in Buckwitz’s career came with her pairing with Mariama Jamanka for the 2017–18 season, a duo affectionately known as the “Berlin Bob.” Their collaboration led to a silver medal at the 2018 Bobsleigh European Championships. The pinnacle of their partnership was at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, where they unexpectedly secured a gold medal in the two-woman event. This victory was particularly noteworthy as they surpassed more favored teams. Following her Olympic success, Buckwitz was awarded the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt and was voted Brandenburg’s Sportswoman of the Year. She continued to perform strongly, winning the opening race of the 2018–19 Bobsleigh World Cup in Sigulda.
Buckwitz has also excelled in monobob, competing in various events including the 2022 Winter Olympics where she and Kim Kalicki placed fourth in the two-woman event. Her career continued with further accolades, including a gold medal at the 2024 IBSF World Championships in Winterberg in the two-woman event and significant placements in the World Cup series, consistently ranking among the top athletes. Beyond her athletic pursuits, Buckwitz has served as a state police officer and was featured in the Olympic edition of German Playboy magazine in February 2022, showcasing her dedication and public profile.
