Lorna Maseko was born on July 3, 1983, in Alexandra, Gauteng, South Africa. She began her career in ballet at the age of nine, training in the Cecchetti method. In 2005, she became noted as the first black ballerina in South Africa. Her dance career included touring internationally and competing in the Prix de Lausanne. She performed as Kitri in the Pretoria production of ‘Don Quixote’ in 2007 and later starred in ‘Carmen’ in 2009, making a return to the stage after a period away from the South African Ballet Theatre. Concurrently with her ballet career, Maseko pursued a Bachelor of Communications at the University of South Africa.
Her career expanded into television, where she took on roles as a presenter and producer for ‘Afro Showbiz News’ and ‘The Weekender’ on SABC. In 2006, she was a finalist on ‘Top Billing’ and returned as a presenter for the show in 2010. Maseko’s television appearances continued with judging ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ in South Africa in 2013 and participating in ‘I Love South Africa’ in 2014, as well as appearing on ‘Zaziwa’. A turning point in her career occurred in 2015 when she competed in ‘MasterChef South Africa’ (Celebrity edition), which ignited her interest in cooking. This led her to complete a year-long culinary course and subsequently host the cooking reality series ‘Top Chef SA’ in 2016 and her own SABC3 series, ‘The Hostess with Lorna Maseko’, in 2017. She also established her presence online with a YouTube channel, ‘Lorna With A Pinch Of Salt’, in 2018.
Maseko has developed an international culinary profile. In 2019, she was featured on the cover of ‘Women’s Health’ magazine. She hosted the World Restaurant Awards in Paris and was a guest speaker at TEDxKedgeBS at KEDGE Business School in Marseille. She also contributed to the EAT Forum in Stockholm, an organization focused on combating world hunger. Her culinary work has been showcased at events like Taste of London and Taste of Dubai. In September 2019, Maseko published her debut cookbook, ‘Celebrate with Lorna Maseko’, through NB Publishers.
