About

Born on April 4, 1960, in Trinidad, Lorraine Toussaint moved to Brooklyn, New York, at the age of ten. She developed an early interest in acting, leading her to enroll in New York’s High School of Performing Arts. Following her graduation, Toussaint pursued advanced theatrical training at the prestigious Juilliard School’s drama division, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her professional career began on the stage, notably as Lady Macbeth with “Shakespeare & Company” on her graduation day, and she dedicated the first 12 years of her career to New York City’s theatre scene before transitioning to screen acting.

Toussaint’s career progression saw her take on various roles across film and television. Her film debut was in the 1989 crime comedy “Breaking In,” starring opposite Burt Reynolds. She made a significant impact in television with her co-starring role as Rene Jackson in the series “Any Day Now,” which ran from 1998 to 2002. This role earned her multiple NAACP Image Award nominations. Later, she gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Yvonne “Vee” Parker, the antagonist in the second season of Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” (2014), a performance for which she received a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Throughout her career, Toussaint has been recognized for her ability to embody complex characters. Her performance in Ava DuVernay’s 2012 film “Middle of Nowhere” earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female. She also played Amelia Boynton Robinson in DuVernay’s critically acclaimed 2014 historical drama “Selma.” Her recent work includes main roles in “The Equalizer” (2021-2025) and recurring voice roles in animated series like “Big City Greens” (2018-present) and “StuGo” (2025), showcasing her versatility across genres and platforms.
