Lux Alptraum

Few editors have shaped the conversation around adult media and culture the way Lux Alptraum has. An American writer and editor, she joined Gawker Media in 2007 and rose to editor-in-chief of Fleshbot in October 2008, steering one of the internet’s most recognizable adult-culture publications through a turbulent era for digital media. Her editorial voice helped define the site’s identity even as the platform struggled under corporate constraints.

Her defining business move came in February 2012, when she acquired Fleshbot outright from Gawker Media and assumed the role of CEO after the site was put up for sale in November 2011. The purchase, backed by a $100,000 promissory note paid in four installments of $25,000, followed a two-month search for a buyer. Under her ownership, Fleshbot rebuilt its platform on WordPress, expanded with Fleshbot Fiction — an erotica imprint curated specifically for women and priced affordably in e-book format — and reversed the publication’s earlier legal stance to reach full compliance with the Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act.

Beyond Fleshbot, Alptraum’s career extended into audio journalism. In 2019 she co-created the News & Politics podcast “Tabloid” with Vanessa Grigoriadis for New York Magazine, extending her reputation for sharp reporting on media, scandal, and culture.

As a writer, editor, and media entrepreneur, Alptraum has built a career at the intersection of sexuality, technology, and journalism — acquiring and reinventing a legacy publication, launching a women-focused publishing imprint, and producing narrative podcast work for major outlets.
