John C. Maxwell was born on February 20, 1947, in Garden City, Michigan. Following in his father’s footsteps, he pursued a path in ministry. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Circleville Bible College in 1969, a Master of Divinity degree from Azusa Pacific University, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. These academic foundations provided him with a comprehensive understanding of human behavior and organizational dynamics, which he later applied to his leadership teachings.
Maxwell began his career leading churches across various states including Indiana, Ohio, California, and Florida. He served as the senior pastor of Skyline Church for 14 years until 1995. In 2004, he returned to congregational ministry at Christ Fellowship in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where he serves as a teaching pastor. His sermons also gained wider recognition through appearances as a guest pastor at Crystal Cathedral in Orange County, California, with his messages featured on the “Hour of Power” television program.
His primary career focus evolved into leadership development, authoring numerous books on the subject, many of which have achieved New York Times Best Seller status. Notable titles include “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” and “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader.” Through his organizations, Injoy Stewardship Services and EQUIP, Maxwell has trained over one million leaders worldwide, demonstrating his influence and impact on leadership principles and practices globally. His work continues to shape how leaders approach their roles and develop their teams.
