Malcolm Gladwell

Malcolm Timothy Gladwell was born on September 3, 1963, in Fareham, England. His mother, Joyce Gladwell, is a Jamaican psychotherapist, and his father, Graham Gladwell, was a mathematics professor from Kent, England. When Gladwell was six, his family relocated from Southampton to Elmira, Ontario, Canada. His childhood was spent in rural Ontario, where he attended a Mennonite church. In 1984, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Trinity College at the University of Toronto. During the spring of 1982, Gladwell completed an internship with the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C.

Gladwell initially sought a career in advertising but, after rejections, began his journalism career at *The American Spectator* and later worked for *Insight on the News*. In 1987, he joined *The Washington Post*, covering business and science until 1996. He transitioned to *The New Yorker* as a staff writer in 1996, where his articles “The Tipping Point” and “The Coolhunt” gained significant attention. These pieces formed the basis of his first book, *The Tipping Point*, published in 2000, for which he received a substantial advance. This book explored social epidemics and was named one of the most influential books of the decade by multiple publications.

His career further progressed with subsequent bestsellers like *Blink* (2005), which delves into rapid cognition, and *Outliers* (2008), which examines environmental factors contributing to success. Gladwell has continued to publish impactful works, including *What the Dog Saw* (2009), *David and Goliath* (2013), *Talking to Strangers* (2019), *The Bomber Mafia* (2021), and *Revenge of the Tipping Point* (2024). He also co-founded Pushkin Industries, an audio production company, and hosts the popular podcast *Revisionist History*, applying his analytical approach to historical events. In 2011, he was appointed to the Order of Canada for his contributions.
