Photographer, curator and filmmaker Manon Mascasaet had art exhibitions, a book and a short film already in list of achievements before she turned 20. Her critically acclaimed first book Sab & Alex successfully captured the end of teendom as she prepared to travel to London after finishing high school with her friends Sabrina and Alex through photographs taken over three years.
She has worked as a photographer for the likes of MadeMe, X-girl and Stussy, and her curation works include Dizzy Magazine’s Dreamhouse exhibition, an art exhibition for the Community Service book fair based in Los Angeles and a zine for Nike. Her short film Big Bad Wolf, My Recent Experience with Romance – told in the narrative of Little Red Riding Hood – premiered at Anthology Film Archives in 2019. Mascasaet has styled for long-loved LA skate wear label FUCT and became the face of their SS16 campaign at the request of Erik Brunetti, founder of the brand.
Mascasaet grew up in New York, and in her mid-teens began to take photographs of her old friends Alex and Sabrina, creating visuals of real life events including the death of her childhood pet gerbil and Sabrina’s 18th birthday. The result of three years of capturing their lives is her debut book, Sab & Alex, a modern account of the end of teenagedom told with fascinating creativity.
It’s not surprising that Mascasaet’s social media accounts are growing exponentially, but having accomplished so much already there’s much more to this rising star than most online influencers, and she is undoubtedly a talent to watch for the future.
