Brazilian tennis player Marcelo Melo is a national icon. A doubles specialist, Melo gained worldwide fame when he was ranked the world number one in November 2015 and is hailed as the best Brazilian doubles player of all time.
Born in Belo Horizonte, Melo comes from a sporting family and is the brother of professional tennis player Daniel Melo. After learning to play tennis at the age of seven, Melo began his professional career in the 2000s. At this time, he became known for regularly teaming up with André Sá, with whom he reached the Wimbledon men’s doubles semifinals in 2007, and the US Open quarterfinal the same year.
Melo reached the French Open mixed doubles finals with Vania King in 2009, becoming the first Brazilian to reach a Grand Slam final in several years. Melo’s career highlights include becoming the first Brazilian male ever to win a French Open doubles title, winning nine masters, over one-thousand titles and reaching the doubles final at the ATP World Tour Finals.
In the 2010’s Melo began partnering with Łukasz Kubot. In 2017, the duo made history when they won the doubles at Wimbledon. Melo continues to dominate the tennis scene, and in 2020 the pair won the 2020 Abierto Mexicano Telcel and the 2020 Erste Bank Open. Melo is a formidable opponent to face, has two Grand Slam wins under his belt and has held the world number one title for fifty-six weeks.
