Maria Erdi

Mária Érdi, born on February 18, 1998, in Budapest, Hungary, is a competitive sailor recognized for her achievements in the ILCA 6 class. Her career includes representing Hungary in two Olympic Games and securing significant international titles. Erdi’s journey in sailing began early, leading her to participate in World Sailing’s Youth Emerging Nations Program (ENP) in Langkawi, Malaysia, in 2015. This program marked an important step in her development, as she gained experience that contributed to her later successes. She qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, placing 14th, and subsequently the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where she finished 13th. These early Olympic appearances highlighted her potential and commitment to the sport.

Erdi’s career progression saw a significant turning point in 2023. After earning a bronze medal at the European Championships in March, she achieved a gold medal at the Allianz World Sailing Championships in August. This made her the first Hungarian sailor to win a Sailing World Championship gold medal in an Olympic class. This accomplishment solidified her position as a top athlete in international sailing. Later in 2023, she was honored as the first sailor ever to win Hungary’s Female Athlete of the Year Award, capping off her successful year. Her most recent achievement includes becoming the 2024 European Champion in the ILCA 6 class.

Throughout her career, Erdi has demonstrated resilience, particularly noteworthy for overcoming an injury in the early stages of her professional journey. Her consistent performance and dedication have kept her among the top-ranked sailors globally, currently sitting seventh in the world rankings.
