About

Mark Boals was born on December 5, 1958, in Youngstown, Ohio. He began his musical journey at a young age, learning piano and bass guitar. Despite never receiving formal vocal training, he honed his skills as a teenager by performing in local groups. His career began gaining momentum in the early 1980s. In 1982, Boals joined Savoy Brown, touring extensively and contributing to material for an unreleased album due to legal issues. He subsequently met Ted Nugent and toured as his bassist in 1984, including opening for Judas Priest in Europe, an experience which offered him significant exposure to large audiences. By 1985, Boals focused on his singing career, moving to California.

In 1985, Mark Boals joined Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force, making his debut performance at Day on the Green in San Francisco before 80,000 fans. He recorded on the 1986 album “Trilogy,” which achieved platinum status and sold millions worldwide. After leaving Malmsteen’s band in 1986 due to management issues, he pursued cinematography and session work for Warner Brothers, contributing to the soundtrack for the film “White Water Summer” (1987). He returned to the music scene in 1993 with the supergroup Billionaires Boys Club, releasing “Something Wicked Comes” on Polydor Records, an album that gained positive reviews but saw the band disband after a year. Boals reunited with Malmsteen in 1996 for the cover album “Inspiration” and later for the album “Alchemy” (1999) and “War To End All Wars” (2000). During this period, he solidified his reputation as a formidable vocalist in the neoclassical metal genre.

In 2000, Boals received the No.1 Vocalist Prize in Japanese music magazines Burrn! and Young Guitar. He embarked on a solo career, forming the band Ring of Fire, releasing albums such as “The Oracle” (2001), and continuing to release solo material like “Ignition” (1998) and “Edge of the World” (2002). His career in the 2000s saw him collaborating on numerous projects and with various artists, including Lion Music, Jason Becker tribute albums, Genius Rock Opera, Lana Lane, Indigo Dying, and Empire. He joined Royal Hunt in 2008 for two studio albums and toured with Uli Jon Roth in the same year. From 2014 to 2015, Boals served as the bassist for Dokken, having previously contributed backing vocals to their 2012 album “Broken Bones,” showcasing his versatility beyond lead vocals. He also performed in the Las Vegas show “Raiding the Rock Vault” and “Tenors of Rock” and joined the band Foundry as a singer-songwriter and bassist.
