His early experiences included tattooing Hell’s Angels members in Massachusetts and later setting up a shop at the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan. During this period, he encountered various counterculture figures and musicians, broadening his exposure within the emerging tattoo scene. By 1980, Mahoney had relocated to Los Angeles, where he continued to develop his craft and clientele within the punk rock and entertainment communities.
