Legendary Australian Mark Viduka is a former professional footballer, who most famously played as a centre forward for Leeds United, Celtic, and Middlesborough. He also captained Australia at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. And his four goals scored in the UEFA Champions League are the most scored by any Australian player. He now lives in Zagreb where he owns a coffee shop.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, to a Croatian father, Viduka started playing football at a young age. He attended the Australian Institute of Sport from 1992-93, before starting his professional career as a player at Melbourne Knights in 1993. In his two seasons with the Knights he was top scorer in the National Soccer League and was twice awarded the NSL Best Player of the Year. In 1995 he moved to Croatia to play for Dinamo Zagreb, going on to be awarded the Best Foreigner Footballer Award in the Croatian League. In 1998 he signed with Celtic for £3.5 million, making his debut in February 1999. He went on to be voted Scottish Player of the Year for the 1999-2000 season after scoring 27 goals. Just before the 2000-01 season, he signed with Leeds United for £6 million, going on to forge an incredible partnership with teammates Alan Smith and Robbie Keane, as well as with Michael Bridges and his fellow Australian Harry Kewell. He made 130 appearances for Leeds scoring 59 goals and helping the side reach European glory with two semi-final appearances in the UEFA Cup and in the UEFA Champions League. He was eventually sold to Middlesborough in the summer of 2004 due to Leeds’s growing financial crisis. He had a successful time at the Teeside club, helping them to a League Cup victory in 2004, and in reaching the League Cup quarter final, the FA Cup semi-final and the UEFA Cup final in 2005-06. He remains Middlesborough’s top scorer with 26 goals in 72 appearances. He left the club to join Newcastle United on a free in 2007, and eventually retired from the game in 2009. On the international stage, he began playing for Australia when he was 18 in 1994, and would go on to represent them as captain at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He retired from international football in 2007 after 43 caps and 11 goals.
