Marta Menegatti, born on August 16, 1990, in Rovigo, Italy, developed her athletic foundation early, playing indoor volleyball from the age of nine. Her transition to beach volleyball began in 2005 or 2006, spurred by a desire to overcome the challenge of playing on sand. She soon excelled, making her international debut in August 2006 on the Challenger and Satellite circuit. Her junior career was highly successful, earning medals at various age-group World and European Championships with different partners. In 2009, at 19, Menegatti committed fully to beach volleyball and partnered with Greta Cicolari, marking her FIVB World Tour debut.
The partnership with Cicolari quickly gained traction, culminating in their first World Tour podium finish in November 2010 at the Phuket Open, where they secured a silver medal. The duo continued their ascent, becoming European champions in August 2011 and achieving a career-high world ranking of No. 4 in August 2012. Menegatti represented Italy at the 2012 London Olympics, finishing fifth. Following an acrimonious split from Cicolari in mid-2013, Menegatti teamed up with Viktoria Orsi Toth. With Orsi Toth, she achieved her first World Tour title at the Sochi Open in September 2015, making them the first Italian women’s team to win such an event. She also competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, experiencing a challenging last-minute partner change due to Orsi Toth’s suspension.
Menegatti faced a period of partner changes and struggles after the 2016 Olympics, impacting her world ranking. However, Orsi Toth’s return to competitive play in July 2018 marked a significant turning point, with the pair winning the Agadir Open and consistently placing in the top ten in subsequent World Tour events. This resurgence propelled Menegatti back into the top 25 of the world rankings. She has continued her Olympic journey, participating in Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, demonstrating consistent performance and resilience throughout her career.
