Oliver Zeidler was born on July 24, 1996, in Dachau, Bavaria, Germany. He stems from a family with a strong rowing background; his grandfather, Hans-Johann Färber, is a double-Olympic medalist, and his aunt, Judith Zeidler, is also an Olympic gold and bronze medalist in rowing. His father, Heino Zeidler, a former junior world champion rower, currently coaches him. Zeidler began his athletic career in swimming, starting at age seven. He competed at a national level, winning a gold medal in the 100 meters freestyle (year 1996 competition), a silver in the open category (years 1994 to 1996), and a bronze in the 200 meters freestyle at the 2015 German year championships in Berlin. He concluded his competitive swimming career in February 2017.
Zeidler transitioned to rowing in September 2016, trying out a single scull at the Oberschleißheim Regatta Course. His entry into rowing competitive quickly yielded results. In 2017, less than a year after his initial trial, he won the open men’s 2000m class in indoor rowing at the World Games in Wrocław, Poland. His first international regatta on water was the 2018 World Rowing Cup I in Belgrade, where he secured a bronze medal in the open men’s single scull. He continued to demonstrate consistent performance, earning another bronze at World Rowing Cup II and silver at World Rowing Cup III, leading to his selection as Germany’s single sculling representative for the 2018 World Rowing Championships, where he finished sixth.
His breakthrough year came in 2019, where he claimed gold at the European Championships and a gold medal at World Cup II in Poznan. Zeidler notably won the 2019 World Rowing Championships in Ottensheim following a close race in the A final. He further solidified his position as a leading rower by winning additional World Championship titles in 2022 and 2023 in the single sculls. In 2023, he also achieved his third Diamond Challenge Sculls victory at the Henley Royal Regatta. Kicking off the 2024 Olympic season, Zeidler secured a win at the World Rowing Cup in Varese, Italy, in April, followed by another gold at the European Rowing Championships in Szeged, Hungary, later that month. He went on to win the 2024 Summer Olympics, setting an Olympic best time of 6:35.77 in the semifinal.
