Martin Lawrence

Martin Lawrence was born on April 16, 1965, in Frankfurt am Main, Hesse, Germany. His father was serving in the United States Air Force at the time. After his parents’ divorce, his family relocated to Landover, Maryland. In his teenage years, Lawrence developed an interest in boxing, becoming a Mid-Atlantic Golden Gloves contender. However, he also discovered a talent for comedy, which a teacher encouraged him to pursue. He began performing stand-up comedy in the Washington, D.C. area, eventually moving to New York City and performing at The Improv comedy club.

Lawrence’s career advanced with his first acting role as Maurice Warfield in the sitcom “What’s Happening Now!!” (1987–1988). A significant turning point was his selection by Russell Simmons to host the HBO series “Def Comedy Jam,” which provided exposure to numerous comedians. In 1992, he co-created and starred in the Fox sitcom “Martin” (1992-1997), playing the titular character and various others, which contributed significantly to Fox’s Thursday night programming.

Following the success of “Martin,” Lawrence transitioned into prominent film roles. He co-starred with Will Smith in the action-comedy “Bad Boys” (1995), a role he reprised in subsequent sequels. He also starred, directed, and wrote “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” (1996). Other notable film appearances include “Nothing to Lose” (1997), “Life” (1999), “Blue Streak” (1999), “Big Momma’s House” (2000), “Big Momma’s House 2” (2006), “Wild Hogs” (2007), and “Bad Boys for Life” (2020). He also ventured into voice acting with animated films like “Open Season” (2006) and the upcoming “Sneaks” (2025). In April 2023, Lawrence received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, acknowledging his contributions to the entertainment industry.
