Martin Lawrence

Martin Lawrence began his career performing comedy shows in the Washington, D.C. area, a path that led him to New York City and appearances at The Improv. His breakout moment arrived with a performance spot on “Star Search,” which, though not a win, captured the attention of Columbia Pictures Television. This led to his first acting role as Maurice Warfield in “What’s Happening Now!!” (1987-1988). Following this, Lawrence secured various minor roles in films and television series, including “Do the Right Thing” (1989), “House Party” (1990), and “Boomerang” (1992). These early roles established him as a comedic presence in the entertainment industry.

Lawrence further solidified his standing in comedy by hosting the influential series “Def Comedy Jam” on HBO. During this period, he also co-created and starred in the hit Fox sitcom “Martin” (1992-1997), playing the titular character Martin Payne and several other popular roles. The success of “Martin” launched him into more prominent film roles, notably as Detective Sergeant Marcus Burnett in the action-comedy “Bad Boys” (1995) alongside Will Smith. This marked a significant turning point, cementing his status as a major film actor and leading to subsequent financially successful films such as “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” (1996), “Nothing to Lose” (1997), and “Big Momma’s House” (2000).

Throughout his career, Lawrence has continued to achieve milestones, including his directorial debut with “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” and his work as an executive producer on many projects, including “Big Momma’s House” (2000) and the “Bad Boys” franchise. He has ventured into voice acting with roles in animated films like “Open Season” (2006) and “Sneaks” (2025). His consistent presence in both comedic and more recent dramatic roles, such as in “Mindcage” (2022), demonstrates his enduring versatility in Hollywood, culminating in a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023.
