Márton Fucsovics is a Hungarian tennis star who progressed from a shining youth career to a successful senior career — and he is still progressing today. At Wimbledon 2021, he reached his first-ever senior Grand Slam quarter-final. In doing so, he became the first male Hungarian player in 40 years to reach any Grand Slam quarter-finals and the first male Hungarian to do so at Wimbledon since 1948. He lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic, but his place in the history books was assured — as was his return to the Top 40 of the World Rankings for the first time in three seasons.
Fucsovics started playing tennis when he was five years old. By the time he was eight, he was holding his own against players four years older than himself. He made good on this early promise during his junior career, which saw him win the singles title at both the Junior Australian Open and Junior Wimbledon in 2010 (not dropping a single set in the latter) as well as the 2009 US Open Boys’ Doubles title. He also helped the Hungarian U-18 national team to win their first-ever European Summer Cup. Unsurprisingly, he was soon ranked as the best junior player in the world and qualified to represent Hungary at the 2010 Youth Olympics.
As a senior, Fucsovics took a few years to establish himself, but he soon did in 2018 when he competed in all four Grand Slam events for the first time, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open in the process. Since then, he has been a strong competitor and getting stronger.
