About

Mary Steenburgen was born on February 8, 1953, in Newport, Arkansas. Her mother, Nellie May Steenburgen, was a school-board secretary, and her father, Maurice H. Steenburgen, was a freight-train conductor. Steenburgen showed an early interest in the arts, participating in school drama and tap-dancing. She attended Hendrix College before moving to New York City in 1972 to study acting professionally at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. During her studies, she supported herself by working as a server at The Magic Pan and for Doubleday.

Steenburgen’s acting career began after she was discovered by Jack Nicholson, who cast her in his 1978 Western comedy “Goin’ South.” Her breakthrough came with critical acclaim for her role in “Time After Time” (1979) and her Academy Award-winning performance as Lynda Dummar in Jonathan Demme’s “Melvin and Howard” (1980), for which she also received a Golden Globe Award. She continued to build a diverse filmography, appearing in notable films such as “Ragtime” (1981), for which she received a Golden Globe nomination, “Cross Creek” (1983), and “Parenthood” (1989). A memorable role was Clara Clayton in “Back to the Future Part III” (1990), a role she reprised in the animated series.

Throughout her career, Steenburgen has demonstrated her range in a variety of roles, including dramatic performances in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993) and “Philadelphia” (1993), as well as comedic turns in “Elf” (2003) and “Step Brothers” (2008). She also took on significant television roles in series like “Joan of Arcadia,” “Justified,” and “The Last Man on Earth.” In addition to her acting, Steenburgen developed a career as a singer and songwriter, a journey that began unexpectedly after a surgery in 2007, leading to a worldwide publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Nashville. Her song “Glasgow (No Place Like Home)” from the film “Wild Rose” (2018) earned her a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Song. She was honored with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award in 2025, further recognizing her contributions beyond entertainment.
