Richard Kyle Barnes was born on February 6, 1981, in Stockton, California. His early exposure to sports came partly from his father, Bruce Barnes, who played as a punter for the New England Patriots in the National Football League. Ricky Barnes pursued his passion for golf at the collegiate level, attending the University of Arizona from 2000 to 2003. During his time there, he received multiple accolades, including Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in 2000, Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year in 2001, and All-American honors in 2000, 2001, and 2003.
His amateur career culminated in a significant win at the 102nd U.S. Amateur in 2002, where he defeated Hunter Mahan. This victory, combined with leading the United States to an Eisenhower Trophy win in 2002 and sharing the Ben Hogan Award with Hunter Mahan in 2003, established his reputation as a formidable talent. In 2003, Barnes also distinguished himself at The Masters, finishing as the low amateur in 21st place, notably outscoring Tiger Woods in the opening round.
Barnes turned professional in 2003, subsequently joining the Nationwide Tour in 2004. A key moment in his professional journey came in 2008 when he secured a PGA Tour card by finishing in the 25th spot on the Nationwide Tour money list. In 2009, he achieved a career highlight at the U.S. Open, setting a 36-hole scoring record and ultimately tying for second place, two shots behind the winner. This performance helped him maintain his tour card, and he continued to achieve several top-10 finishes in subsequent seasons, showcasing consistent performance in professional golf.
