Mats André Zuccarello Aasen was born on September 1, 1987, in Oslo, Norway. He began his ice hockey career at age five in the suburbs of Løren, Oslo. After playing for Hasle-Løren and Vålerenga, he received a scholarship to the Norwegian College of Elite Sport and joined Frisk Asker. He played full-time for Frisk in the GET-ligaen, Norway’s premier league, starting at age 18. In the 2006–07 season, he recorded 59 points in 43 games, ranking third in league scoring. In 2007–08, Zuccarello helped Frisk achieve the best regular season record and reached the finals, contributing 64 points in the regular season and 27 points in 15 playoff games.
Zuccarello then transitioned to Swedish hockey, signing with Modo Hockey of the Elitserien. In his first season, he had 40 points in 35 games. The following season, he led the team with 23 goals and a league-leading 64 points, earning the Guldhjälmen (Golden Helmet) as the league’s most valuable player in 2010. This success led to his signing with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the summer of 2010. He made his NHL debut on December 23, 2010, becoming the seventh Norwegian player to play in the league, and scored his first NHL goal on January 5, 2011. After a brief return to Europe to play for Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Kontinental Hockey League, he returned to the Rangers in 2013.
His tenure with the Rangers included a breakout 2013–14 season, where he achieved career highs in goals, assists, and points, helping the team reach the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals. Zuccarello became the first Norwegian to participate in the Stanley Cup Finals. He continued to be a key player for the Rangers, winning the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award multiple times (2014, 2016, 2017) and being a finalist for the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2015–16. In 2019, he was traded to the Dallas Stars, and later that year, signed a five-year contract with the Minnesota Wild. In 2022, he set a Wild team record for most assists in a season with 55 and reached his 500th career NHL point. In 2023, Zuccarello signed a two-year, $8.25 million contract extension with the Wild, ensuring his presence with the team through the 2025–26 season.
