Matthew Staton Bomer was born on October 11, 1977, in Webster Groves, Missouri, and raised in Spring, Texas. He attended Klein High School before pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After graduating, Bomer moved to New York to begin his acting career. His early work included roles in theater, followed by television appearances. He gained initial recognition with a small part in “All My Children” and a recurring role as Ben Reade in “Guiding Light.” This was followed by appearances in “Tru Calling,” “Chuck,” and a lead role in “Traveler.” Bomer also secured film roles in “Flightplan” (2005) and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” (2006).
In 2009, Bomer was cast in the lead role of Neal Caffrey, a criminal mastermind, in USA Network’s “White Collar,” which brought him wider acclaim and ran until 2014. During this period, he expanded his filmography with roles in “In Time” (2011), “Magic Mike” (2012), and its 2015 sequel. A significant milestone in his career was his performance in the television film “The Normal Heart” (2014), which earned him a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. He continued to take on varied roles, including a guest appearance on “American Horror Story: Freak Show” and a main role in “American Horror Story: Hotel.”
Bomer has further diversified his career by taking on producing and directing roles, as seen with his executive producer credits on “Mid-Century Modern” and “Fellow Travelers,” and his directorial debut on “American Crime Story” (2018). His stage work includes a Broadway revival of “The Boys in the Band” (2018), where he also reprised his role for the 2020 film adaptation. His recent projects include the Max series “Doom Patrol” (2019–2023), the Showtime miniseries “Fellow Travelers” (2023), and the Academy Award-nominated film “Maestro” (2023). Bomer is also known for being an LGBTQ rights activist, publicly coming out in 2012.
