There can’t be many people who don’t know that Meg Ryan is an international film star. She has been nominated for three Best Actress Golden Globes for her roles in When Harry Met Sally…, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail, and also has films like The Doors, Anastasia, Kate & Leopold, Proof of Life, Top Gun, and The Women to her name. She made her directorial debut in 2016 with the film Ithaca. As well as major film awards, she has received several honours including Woman of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Ryan was originally training to be a journalist at college and only turned to acting to get some extra money. Her success, however, led to her leaving her course before graduation and turning to full-time acting. After building her reputation throughout the 1980s, she got her big break when she was cast as one of the leads in the comedy movie When Harry Met Sally… Her performance, and “that” scene, endeared her to the public and the critics, and she won various awards for the role. Her next major hit came in 1993, starring alongside Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle, which became one of the year’s biggest films, grossing 227 million dollars. The pair reunited in 1998 for You’ve Got Mail, which became another box-office smash, taking a quarter of a billion dollars.
Throughout the 2000s, Ryan diversified into indie films and directing, adding yet more depth to her extensive resume. Recently, she has had TV cameos in hit shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm.
