Melissa Ben-Ishay was born Melissa Bushell in Hillsdale, New Jersey. She pursued her education at Syracuse University from 2002 to 2006, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Family Studies. After completing her studies, Ben-Ishay began her professional career at an advertising agency in New York City, working as an assistant media planner. In 2008, she was terminated from her position at Deutsch.
Following her termination in 2008, Melissa Ben-Ishay was encouraged by her brother, Brian Bushell, to focus on her passion for baking cupcakes. This led to the formation of Baked by Melissa. The initial operations for Baked by Melissa began in the basement of Cafe Bari in late 2008, with sales primarily occurring at holiday markets in Union Square and Bryant Park in New York City. In March 2009, Ben-Ishay, alongside her brother and three other co-founders, established a pop-up window in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, marking the company’s first retail presence.
Melissa Ben-Ishay initially held the roles of President and Chief Product Officer for Baked by Melissa. The company expanded significantly, opening its first walk-in store in Union Square in 2010. By 2019, Ben-Ishay assumed the role of CEO. Today, Baked by Melissa operates 14 retail locations in the New York City metropolitan area and offers nationwide shipping of its products, specializing in bite-sized cupcakes and other treats. In October 2017, she published her first cookbook, “Cakes by Melissa: Life Is What You Bake It,” which includes over 120 recipes for cakes, icings, and fillings.
