Melvin Ingram III was born on April 26, 1989, in Hamlet, North Carolina. He attended Richmond Senior High School in Rockingham, North Carolina, where he played linebacker, recording 87 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his senior year. Ingram later showcased his talent at the University of South Carolina, playing for the Gamecocks. He transitioned from linebacker to defensive end during his college career, leading the team with nine sacks in 2010. His senior year in 2011 was particularly notable, as he registered 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and two interceptions. He also scored three touchdowns, including a 68-yard run on a fake punt and a 5-yard fumble return against Georgia. His performance earned him first-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors and recognition as a consensus All-American.
Ingram was selected by the San Diego Chargers as the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft. In his rookie season, he played in all 16 games, contributing 18 quarterback pressures and 12 special teams tackles. Despite tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2013, he made a return to the field, recording a strip-sack and fumble recovery against the Oakland Raiders in Week 16. The Chargers placed the franchise tag on Ingram in 2017, and he subsequently signed a four-year, $66 million contract. That year, he earned the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September and was selected to his first Pro Bowl. He continued to be a key defensive player, making Pro Bowl appearances in 2018 and 2019.
His career saw progression through various NFL teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021, followed by a trade to the Kansas City Chiefs later that year. In 2022, he signed with the Miami Dolphins, continuing to contribute to their defense with multiple sacks and tackles. In 2023, he rejoined the Dolphins’ practice squad, eventually being promoted to the active roster. Throughout his professional career, Melvin Ingram has demonstrated resilience and consistent performance, accumulating 58.5 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, and 3 interceptions over 148 career games.
