Born on July 2, 1990, in Birmingham, Alabama, Merritt Mathias established herself as a top-ranked soccer recruit early in her career, earning accolades such as being a Parade Magazine high school All-America selection in 2007 and a National High School Coaches Association All-America in 2006 and 2007. She played collegiate soccer at both the University of North Carolina and Texas A&M University, where she majored in Agriculture Leadership and Development. During her time at Texas A&M, she was named to the All-Big 12 first team and the Big 12 All-Newcomer team, demonstrating her significant impact on the field with impressive goal and assist statistics.
Mathias began her professional career in 2012 with the WPSL Elite’s New York Fury before being drafted into the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) by FC Kansas City in 2013. With FC Kansas City, she contributed to their NWSL Championship win in 2014. Her journey continued at Seattle Reign FC from 2015 to 2017, where she helped secure the NWSL Shield in 2015. A pivotal move to North Carolina Courage in 2018 saw her achieve significant success, winning two NWSL Championships and two Supporters Shields in 2018 and 2019. Her defensive prowess was recognized with a spot on the NWSL Second XI in 2018, a season where the team set a league record for fewest goals conceded. In 2023, Mathias was traded to Angel City FC, and she announced her retirement at the end of the 2024 season.
Beyond her club achievements, Mathias has represented the United States at various youth national team levels, including the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-23 teams. She earned her first senior cap for the United States women’s national soccer team in 2018 during a friendly against China PR and was part of the U.S. roster that won the 2018 Tournament of Nations. Throughout her extensive career, Mathias has consistently adapted her play, transitioning from an offensive role in college to a formidable defender in the NWSL, contributing to multiple championship-winning teams and solidifying her legacy as an impactful player in women’s professional soccer.
