Michael Chiklis

Michael Charles Chiklis was born on August 30, 1963, in Lowell, Massachusetts. He began acting professionally at age thirteen, participating in regional theater productions and becoming a member of the Actors’ Equity Association. He pursued formal training at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting. After graduating, Chiklis moved to New York City to continue his stage career. His early career saw him cast as John Belushi in the 1989 biopic ‘Wired,’ a role for which his performance was noted despite the film’s general reception. He also appeared in various television series, including ‘Miami Vice,’ ‘L.A. Law,’ and ‘Seinfeld,’ establishing a foundation for his diverse acting portfolio.

Chiklis gained widespread recognition for his role as Police Commissioner Tony Scali in the ABC comedy-drama series ‘The Commish,’ which aired from 1991 to 1996. Following this, he deliberately transformed his physical appearance, undergoing an extensive workout regimen and shaving his head, to pursue different types of roles. This transformation led to his casting as the anti-hero LAPD Detective Vic Mackey in the FX police drama ‘The Shield’ (2002–2008). His portrayal of Vic Mackey earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2002 and a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series-Drama in 2003. Further cementing his status in popular culture, Chiklis fulfilled a childhood dream by portraying Ben Grimm / The Thing in the ‘Fantastic Four’ films (2005, 2007).

Throughout his career, Chiklis has demonstrated versatility across various mediums. He has lent his voice to animated projects such as the English dub of Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘Spirited Away’ and ‘Family Guy’ and has taken on significant roles in television series like ‘No Ordinary Family’ (2010–2011), ‘Vegas’ (2012–2013), ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ (2014–2015), and ‘Gotham’ (2015–2017). His recent work includes roles in the film ‘Don’t Look Up’ (2021), ‘Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty’ (2022–2023), and ‘Hotel Cocaine’ (2024), demonstrating his continued presence and impact in the entertainment industry.
