Michael Ironside

Frederick Reginald Ironside, known professionally as Michael Ironside, was born on February 12, 1950, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His artistic inclinations surfaced early, writing a prize-winning play titled “The Shelter” at age fifteen, which he then self-produced with the prize money. Ironside pursued formal education at the Ontario College of Art, honed his acting skills with Janine Manatis, and studied for three years at the Canadian National Film Board. Prior to his acting career, he worked in construction as a roofer, demonstrating a diverse range of early experiences before his entry into the entertainment industry.

Ironside began his acting career in the late 1970s. He gained significant recognition for his role as the psychic Darryl Revok in David Cronenberg’s 1981 film “Scanners.” This was followed by impactful performances such as the villainous Colt Hawker in “Visiting Hours” (1982) and the hardened Jester in the 1986 film “Top Gun.” His career continued to build in the science fiction genre, notably as Richter in Paul Verhoeven’s “Total Recall” (1990) and Lieutenant Jean Rasczak in “Starship Troopers” (1997). These roles solidified his reputation for portraying authoritative and often antagonist characters.

Beyond film, Ironside’s career expanded into television and voice acting. He had a recurring role on “SeaQuest 2032” and made guest appearances on series such as “The A-Team” and “ER.” He has also lent his distinct voice to video games, portraying Sam Fisher in the “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell” franchise, and voicing iconic animated characters like Darkseid in the DC Animated Universe. His work continues to span various mediums, including recent appearances in the TV series “Barry” (2022-2023) and “The Dropout” (2022), demonstrating a sustained and adaptable career.
