About

Michael Jerome Irvin, born on March 5, 1966, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, embarked on a distinguished football career that solidified his place in NFL history. He was the 15th of 17 children and attended Piper High School and St. Thomas Aquinas High School. During his college years at the University of Miami, under coach Jimmy Johnson, Irvin set school records for career receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown receptions. He was a key member of the 1987 national championship team, demonstrating his playmaking ability early on. He earned All-American honors multiple times, with second-team recognition as a freshman and junior, and first-team as a sophomore. After a stellar college career, Irvin declared for the NFL draft, marking the beginning of his professional journey.

Irvin was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys as the 11th pick in the first round of the 1988 NFL draft. He spent his entire 12-year professional career with the Cowboys, earning the nickname “the Playmaker” for his ability to perform in crucial moments. He became one of the famed “Triplets” alongside Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith, leading the Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories in 1992, 1993, and 1995. His career was marked by numerous achievements including five Pro Bowl selections and leading the NFL in receiving yards in 1991. Notably, in Super Bowl XXVII, he scored two touchdowns in an 18-second span, a Super Bowl record for a single player. His playing career concluded in 1999 following a cervical spine injury, leading to his retirement in May 2000.

Following his retirement from professional football, Irvin transitioned into a broadcasting career. He became a broadcaster for ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown and later joined NFL Network as an analyst. His post-playing career also includes appearances on television shows such as “Dancing with the Stars” and “Pros vs. Joes,” and a role in the 2005 remake of “The Longest Yard.” Irvin’s contributions to football were recognized with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007, the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor in 2005, and the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He continues to be an influential voice in the football community, sharing his extensive experience and insights.
