Michael Kay, born on February 2, 1961, in the Bronx, New York City, developed an early passion for the New York Yankees, which would eventually define his career. He pursued his interest in sports broadcasting by studying communications at Fordham University, where he also honed his skills at the university’s radio station, WFUV. Kay began his professional journey in 1982 as a general assignment writer for the New York Post, gradually transitioning to sports-specific reporting, covering college basketball, the NBA, and eventually the New Jersey Nets. In 1987, he became the Yankees beat reporter for the Post, marking the beginning of his extensive association with the team.
Kay’s career progressed rapidly in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He moved to the New York Daily News in 1989, continuing his coverage of the Yankees, and simultaneously took on reporting duties for the MSG Network. A significant turning point occurred in 1992 when he transitioned from newspaper reporting to radio broadcasting, partnering with John Sterling as the radio announcers for the New York Yankees on WABC. This move was groundbreaking, as Kay became the first newspaper reporter in any sport to move full-time into a broadcast booth, performing both play-by-play and analysis. He broadcasted the Yankees’ four World Series championships during his ten years on radio.
In 2002, Kay made a significant move to television, becoming the lead play-by-play announcer for the newly launched YES Network, a role he continues to hold. That same year, he also began hosting “CenterStage,” an interview program, and “The Michael Kay Show” on ESPN Radio in New York (later simulcast on YES). From 2014 to 2024, he co-hosted “The Michael Kay Show,” and in 2025, he launched a new solo show. Throughout his career, Kay has earned numerous accolades, including multiple New York Emmy Awards for his play-by-play work, his hosting duties on “CenterStage,” and his contributions to the YES Network’s Yankees coverage. He was inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016 and the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2018. His career highlights also include co-hosting special “KayRod Casts” on ESPN2 with Alex Rodriguez during the 2022 and 2023 MLB seasons and calling postseason games for ESPN Radio.
