Michael Vick

Michael Dwayne Vick was born on June 26, 1980, in Newport News, Virginia. Growing up in a challenging environment, Vick found an escape and a path forward through sports, particularly football, which his father introduced to him at an early age. His exceptional athletic talent became evident during his high school career at Homer L. Ferguson High School and later Warwick High School in Newport News. Under the guidance of coach Tommy Reamon, Vick developed into a formidable quarterback, passing for 4,846 yards and 43 touchdowns, alongside 1,048 rushing yards and 18 scores during his three years as a starter. His impressive performances earned him a scholarship to Virginia Tech, where he quickly made a name for himself.

At Virginia Tech, Vick’s collegiate career was marked by immediate impact. As a redshirt freshman in 1999, he led the Hokies to an undefeated regular season and a Bowl Championship Series national title game appearance in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. Despite a loss, Vick’s ability to rally his team and his dual-threat prowess were undeniable. He led the NCAA in passing efficiency that year, a freshman record, and received the Archie Griffin Award as college football’s most valuable player, finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting. His sophomore season in 2000 solidified his reputation, with notable performances including a career-high 210 rushing yards against Boston College and an MVP award in the Toyota Gator Bowl. Leaving Virginia Tech after his sophomore year, Vick was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2017 and is set to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2025.

Professionally, Vick was the first overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, making him the first African-American quarterback to be selected with the top pick. He quickly became one of the league’s most exciting players, known for his unprecedented speed and agility for a quarterback. He earned three Pro Bowl selections during his tenure with the Falcons, leading the team to two playoff appearances and an NFC Championship Game. After re-signing with the Nike Group, he later signed with the Philadelphia Eagles where he was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2010. His unique talent redefined the quarterback position, leaving a lasting mark on the NFL with records such as being the first quarterback to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. After retiring as a player in 2017, Vick transitioned into coaching, serving as an advisor for the Atlanta Legends in 2019 and most recently named the head football coach at Norfolk State University in December 2024.
