Mike Grella

Michele “Mike” Grella, born on January 23, 1987, in Glen Cove, New York, established a notable career as a professional soccer player from a young age. His youth career was marked by significant achievements, including being a Parade Magazine High School All-American soccer player in 2003 and 2004, and the 2004 NSCAA National High School Player of the Year for Glen Cove High School. He led his club team, the Albertson Red Storm, to USYSA National Championships in both 2003 and 2004, and the Red Storm Academy to a Super Y-League Championship in 2004. Grella continued his impressive trajectory in college, playing for Duke University where he earned a first-team All-American honor in 2008.

Grella’s professional journey took him across various leagues and continents. After being drafted by Toronto FC in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, he pursued a career in Europe, signing with Leeds United in 2009. His tenure at Leeds spanned from 2009 to 2011, during which he gained valuable experience, including loan spells at Carlisle United and Swindon Town. He then played for Brentford in 2011-2012, Bury in 2012, Scunthorpe United from 2012-2013, and Viborg FF in Denmark in late 2013. Returning to North America, he joined the Carolina RailHawks in 2014 before making a significant mark with the New York Red Bulls from 2015 to 2017, where he was integral to their MLS Supporters’ Shield win in 2015 and set a record for the fastest goal in MLS history.

Following his playing career, Grella seamlessly transitioned into sports analysis, leveraging his deep understanding of the game. He currently serves as a soccer analyst for CBS Sports Network and Paramount+, providing commentary on matches, including Serie A and MLS Season Pass. His analytical approach has garnered attention, particularly his candid remarks regarding team performances, such as his “layup” comment about the Australian national team during the World Cup draw. This observation sparked considerable debate, highlighting his direct and often controversial commentary style, which resonates with both domestic and international sports audiences.
