Mindaugas Griškonis is a distinguished Lithuanian rower, celebrated for his achievements in single and double sculls, culminating in an Olympic silver medal.
Mindaugas Griškonis was a student at Mykolas Romeris University. He and fellow MRU student Saulius Ritter won silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the Men's Double Sculls. Griškonis also won a silver medal at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne in 2015 while studying at MRU.
Mindaugas Griškonis has been affiliated with the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee as an Olympian and later approved as the General Secretary following his retirement.
Griškonis was named 'Geriausias Lietuvos sportininkas' (Best Lithuanian Athlete) in 2021, an award often recognized and recorded by public encyclopedic sources.
Mindaugas Griškonis was born on January 17, 1986, in Vilnius, Lithuania. He began his sporting career in 1999 and quickly rose through the ranks in competitive rowing. Early in his career, he was coached by Inga Domarkaitė, and later by Alfonsas Mikšys for an extended period, leading to several significant early successes. Griškonis pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree from Vilnius Pedagogical University and later enrolling in master’s studies at Mykolas Romeris University. His academic pursuits ran concurrently with his demanding athletic career, demonstrating a commitment to both intellectual and physical development.
Griškonis’s international breakthroughs began with a silver medal at the European Rowing Championships in Poznań in 2007. This was followed by a gold medal at the European Championships in Brest in 2009, marking him as a leading figure in European rowing. He continued to dominate the European stage, securing additional gold medals in Plovdiv (2011) and Varese (2012). His consistent performance led to his inclusion in the Lithuanian Olympic team starting in 2008, where he competed in three Olympic Games, demonstrating remarkable longevity and dedication to his sport.
A significant career highlight for Griškonis was winning a silver medal in the double sculls event at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. This Olympic medal, achieved with his partner Saulius Ritter, solidified his status as one of Lithuania’s most accomplished athletes. Throughout his career, Griškonis also distinguished himself by setting national records, including improving the Lithuanian indoor rowing 2000m record in 2014 with a time of 5:49.9. In 2021, he was recognized as the Best Lithuanian Athlete. Mindaugas Griškonis retired from professional rowing in mid-August 2024 due to health and injury concerns, transitioning to the role of General Secretary of the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee.
